You can borrow or second an employee in various scenarios.

Written by Relu

There are some differences that you need to be aware when you decide to borrow or second an employee.

Borrow an employee

Use this for short-term changes:

• Example: covering a shift for a week or a few days.
• You add them to another site’s rota temporarily so it’s properly staffed.
• It’s flexible and helps with quick scheduling adjustments.

Second an employee

Use this for longer-term changes:

• Example: someone moving to another site for several months like covering maternity leave.
• Their role is formally changed for that period.

So, in simple terms:

  • If you want for short cover you use Borrow.

  • If you need for longer assignment use Secondment.
